The helper can be ableist – how to offer antiableist support
No matter if online or offline, if in private relationships or groups which dedicated themselves to solidarity, help and support and how these are given will be a crucial matter. To help someone seems to be a “good” thing, but it also can be performed with a parternalistic/ableist attitude. This risk exists when the ppl who support are thinking they know better what is helpful for the person in need than the person who is in the actual situation needing help. While the intention to help might be good, this happens nevertheless, bc some ppl don’t wanna bear the vague situation, their own clueless- and helplessness or the complexity of the problems of another person. They often offer a one-size-fits-all solution or tell the person to do it “like I once did” when they were in a similar situation or at least think they were. That is mostly not a compatible advice, bc there are no two genuinely identic human beings and same situations at all. Questions like “Why don’t you just…?” are suggesting in an ableist way that the person in need only has to try hard enough or has not done enough thinking. Sorry, but if it would be that easy (for an individual), it wasn’t a problem in first place. I prefer to ask ppl if they know something that could be helpful, make a difference. There will not always be an answer to it, but I think this should be the first question in order to help someone a wanted way. Unsolicited or uninformed advice will only steal energy from the person, that needs to put this energy into problem solving.
Unsolicited/uninformed advice is a very common ableist behaviour, especially towards disabled ppl. Paternalism instead of individual support is a real shitty experience. First: Ask the person which help/support they want. Second: Think through if you can help/support the way the person wishes for. If you don’t have the resources, if the uttered wish makes you meet your ethical or other borders, you’ll have to say an honest no. Some ppl act defensive when they feel helpless and find it hard to say no and they get angry at the person who “makes” them feel this way, they blame all the uncomfyness and stress on the person in need, who actually has the problem but is not the problem. Therefore the problem itself gets downplayed/trivialized and the endeavour aims at a quick and simple solution. Or the wish of the person who needs support will be declared as “unrealistic/big expectation”, as an impossible wish in general. Learning to bear one’s own helplessness and developing an understanding that ppl want to be taken seriously in first place, to be listened to, bc there will not always be a solution at hand anyway, might help to reduce the pressure on all concerned. It is an ableist value to expect that there always has to be a quick solution for everything. With no time for development. That ppl are not always able to help the wanted way and are honest about it is okay, not having the spoons or the knowledge is okay, it is okay to be honest.
What if the person in need does not have any idea what might help? You can offer to look for helpful information, you can delegate the task to other ppl, who are competent if the person agrees.
How to offer solidary support as a group? First find out what kind of support is wanted, do not just look for reasons to get your already existing political agenda confirmed. You will not always get confirmed, you will not always understand at once what it is about, why something else is more important for the ppl who need support than for the supporters. Just having good intentions is not enough and often leads to paternalism. Not only ableism can be an obstacle on the road to compatible/appropriate help. Not addressing racism, not trying to dismantle the power structure and change it, keeps from being a good supporter. And this does cause an immense harm instead of being helpful. A woman who supported refugees did call them “the african boys of Miss soandso…” and I cringed, bc she did not only center the helper, Miss soandso, but she used this paternalizing possessive pronoun and Afrika was a country again. And Infantilization.
When I started to support a Kurdish woman I was a little bit anxious to meet her husband for the first time. What if he opposes her wishes, what if he doesn’t want her to be emancipated? Why did I think that although I never met him until that very day? I realized that is racist, too. I was ashamed, but it also taught me, I have to pay attention, notice these prejudices and correct myself, no white person is never racist. Ppl who think they can’t be ableist/racist etc can’t change.
Since my childhood I hear ppl say: ”Everything is give and take:” It began to sound like book-keeping to me, like an accountant and this is simply unrealistic, that there always will be a balance otherwise the ppl don’t deserve what you have to give. This dismisses the reality of very different amount of resources and privileges and forms of oppression. If person B gets something from person A, person B might not ever be able to give something what Person A needs, but can help person C one day with something. So there might be not a balance in an economically sense, but in a big solidary community, where need is not just met with advice “to take a time out, practice selfcare, bootstraps blabla” this could work: What goes around, comes around.
But maybe this balance can’t exist before we approach equality, before we not have left behind this time where “needing more” bc one experiences disadvantages, barriers and many sorts of lack due to oppression, is perceived as “taking more”.
Incomplete notes on surviving as a nonbinary disabled person
#CN_sexualized_abuse #CN_cis_sexism #TW_assault_bc_some_details_of_assault_are_mentioned
International Women’s Day is approaching and so is anxiety as well. Each year I wish for inclusion of WoC/queer and trans PoC/of trans women, trans men, inter persons, nonbinary ppl and all gender nonconforming ppl at all/ of disabled feminists and of poor feminists. But this hope dies always in advance.
Why in all the world do I want to be part of international Women’s Day, when I don’t “identify” as a woman? Maybe bc there is no day for me, maybe bc queerfeminism made me hope it is not only about white dya cis middleclass nondisabled women, but about a lot of marginalized ppl who are oppressed by patriarchic structures. LGBTQIA+ exists for a reason.
No, the reason is not lipservice, intersectionality should be more than just a word, show me your speakers list and I tell you what I mean.
So, I never go very near that event, bc too much ableism, too much cis sexism etc. I have to keep my distance. A long time I thought I wouldn’t experience dysphoria. Maybe bc I don’t feel like my body is wrong, I just I feel strong discomfort to be physically present when an event is supposed to be feminist and then only women are mentioned and after some dozen times the “word” female is dropped, I just want to disappear. Literally. I am only included as long as I don’t clarify the error. Why can’t this finally be an International Feminists’ Day that really accommodates all the named above?
This is not how I wanted to start this text actually. I wanted a calm moment where I could think about what role me being nonbinary played in the sexualized abuse I experienced. I did not turn nonbinary bc of violence, or „reject womanhood” therefore, I had always been nonbinary, before this happened to me and this is one intersection that shaped how I experienced it (here I wrote which impact the threat of classism had, too).
The message an abuser gives you, is that your agency/your own will does not count. For me, it was like he wanted me to show where my place is, especially bc I didn’t behave as I was supposed to, I was cheeky and somehow self-confident and gendernonconforming without knowing the word. Being just me was mistaken for “thinking I was above/ something special” whatever. So, this putting me “in my place” has not only a sexist connotation, but also a cis sexist, it was supposed to be also “corrective violence”. Somehow this sometimes feels like “this happened to me”, bc of misgendering. But I know this happens to a lot of kids of all genders, even more often when they are disabled or chronically ill which is an aspect that makes more vulnerable to abuse.
Still: This is a thorn in my side, that I don’t get rid of, no matter how much I process the abuse in itself…bc I Iam confronted permanently that solidarity I get happens very often at the price of misgendering. Finally there are surveys about disabled survivors and when you have a close look at it, most of them speak only about women and girls, how much more likely they are abused, which might be true and nevertheless, then something crumbles in me. I don’t know how all the others feel who are erased, but I guess not much better.
There have been funds for projects about the topic “abuse” or for psychotherapy, but just for women and girls, and I am very afraid most of them mean cis gender, bc I can’t find hints for inclusion. I couldn’t apply at the price of misgendering. So I don’t know if this qualifies as dysphoria, this wanting to disappear when being misgendered or erased for the one hundredth time.
There is an organization that helps victims of violence and crime recommended by the police, A police officer gave these adresses after an assault that I experienced as a university student in my twenties. But I had had to listen to too much cissexist crap already, like „I never should be anywhere alone, AS A WOMAN, never ever“ and of course buy things for my defense and take part in a self defense course. As much as this smells like victim blaming women and is horrible in itself, think for a moment what it might be like to have to listen to this when you are not a woman, but as an agender NB. A fellow student was at my side at the police station when I was summoned to maybe identify a suspect. I couldn’t really say if one of them was the guy who tried to kill me. And I didn’t want to blame the wrong person. But the fellow student had the nerve to play investigation and asked one of the ppl who witnessed a suspect get drunk before the assault if the suspect „seemed to be a misogynist“. I didn’t want to hear any of it, even if it was likely that the assault had as an intention misogynist motives, bc among all the ppl who were that day on that plateau he didn’t choose a kid or a man. And I will never know what he actually wanted to do with me or the corpse when I would have lost conscience or stopped breathing, when he would have succeeded, if he had not been interrupted by the sudden presence of another human being at that place.
Not long ago I was at a panel about producing gender equality in film business. Not one time it was mentioned how the business deals with trans women in case they apply for a fund/programm for women, do they acknowledge them before legal name change, is it SAFE to apply? How do they deal with Enbies? I spaced away to avoid to listen to more „dropping“ of the word „female“ (I’d prefer: women directors) and sentences like:“…comes/is NATURALLY for women…“.
I remember a “feminist event”, It was with Laurie Penny, Mona Eltahawy and another feminist, they spoke of women, maybe 2-3 times explicit of trans women, but very short, Laurie Penny talked a little longer about cis men and their (!) fears. Not one time I heard the word nonbinary. I crawled into myself with every “female” they dropped and was a small ball at the end of the evening.
Is this dysphoria? Whatever it is, cis sexism and erasure are oppressive and make it harder to survive while being excluded already on so many levels.
The role of family regarding abuse – chat on #DisabledSurvivor
#DisabledSurvivor chat on Wednesday February 22nd 2017 at 8 pm CET/ 11 am PST/ 2 pm EST
Welcome to #DisabledSurvivor, a space for all disabled survivors of emotional, physical and sexualized #CN_abuse.
You can read about what we talked about so far on the hashtag #DisabledSurvivor.
This time I want to host a chat about the “role of family regarding abuse of disabled survivors”, bc I think it is crucial if there was/is someone in our surroundings who is believing us, a person to disclose to, or if we get/got the same message as from the majority of society to keep quiet in order to not complicate their relations to abusers, especially when those are in a powerful positions.
The more marginalized a person is, the harder abuse is to disclose. Nobody wants more #stigma on top of the already existing. Survivors often protect their families when those families are already multiple marginalized.
This topic occupied a lot of my thoughts, how come that a progressive and in many cases solidary family of mine internalized the unwritten law to keep silent about abuse? Was it just classism they feared, was it something beyond the individual situation? In my first (guest) blogpost ever years ago where I examined stigmatizing wording for survivors and abuse, the situations of late disclosure, I retell some scenes of Thomas Vinterbergs movie “Festen” (The celebration). All the guests are confronted with the abuse that Christian discloses on the birthday celebration of his father, the patriarch, but they go on celebrating as if nothing ever happened. They are for me “society”. And for me society does not play a small „supporting role“ in individual lives. Ever.
You can answer the question as personal or as abstract as you need them to be.
You are welcome to name all intersections you experience if you want to.
(With “role of family regarding abuse” I don’t necessarily think of abuse by relatives, but of their positioning towards the #abuse)
If you respond to a question such as Q1, your tweet should follow this format: “A1 [your message] #DisabledSurvivor
If you need more than one tweet to answer, please add (1) or /1 and so forth to this format, thanks!
As possible participants live in very different time zones, feel welcome to answer the questions later as well, I will come back to you the next day/ASAP.
Q1: What do you think needs to be urgently addressed on this #DisabledSurvivor chat about familiy’s role regarding abuse?
Q2: What role does family play regarding the im_possibility of disclosure of CN_abuse? #DisabledSurvivor
Q3: Which other forms of oppression make it harder for a survivor (and maybe for the family) to get support/back up? #DisabledSurvivor
Q4: How does being disabled make especially vulnerable to experience #abuse by close ppl/significant others? #DisabledSurvivor
Q5: What does being believed (for the first time/at all) change? What is a helpful reaction/support towards a survivor? #DisabledSurvivor
Q6: What would make it a little bit easier to talk about #abuse, especially as a #DisabledSurvivor and multiple marginalized person?
Q7: Has there ever been any helpful representation of a (disabled) #survivor in RL/films/books etc that empowered you? #DisabledSurvivor
Q8: What do you think, what kind fundamentally change in society does it need to change the discourse about #survivors? #DisabledSurvivors
Being needy and disabled after Sagamihara and why independence is a myth
Being needy and disabled after Sagamihara and why independence is a myth
(#CN_ableist_murder, #CN_eugenics, #CN_graphic_imagination)
The 26th of July left me with a lump in my throat, I hardly wrote about all the thoughts and feelings the ableist killings of disabled at Sagamihara in a care facility evoked in me. I only shared the blogposts of other disabled tweeps, added a few tweets and it was obvious that nondisabled people didn’t care and it is difficult for me to articulate these things knowing this discouraging fact: That even in the social justice/queerfeminist bubble little solidarity with disabled ppl exists.
“We are not like those!” is also a known narrative of feminism. It ends with protesting against being put into the same pathologizing (as feeble/weak/etc) category as some other people who are considered to belong there.
Back to Sagamihara: As I have a vivid imagination and little filter I saw in my mind disabled people waking up to their death. Waking up in the moment they get stabbed, maybe realizing that the killer is someone familiar, dying with the confusion what is actually happening. Horrific. “19 disabled people killed in their sleep” the media wrote, which of course sounds much more peaceful.
Maybe it is time to acknowledge that people who work in social and medical professions can be ableist, biased and influenced by eugenics. How many disabled people experience abuse/violence/power play in the relations with medical/care staff in institutions, or with relatives/partners they depend on?
Of course the victims of the ableist murder are not individually portrayed. So what is usually portrayed? The hobbies, the close relations and the character of victims. And this won’t work here. It is exactly this portrayal-narrative of “what/who is a loss?” that is a crucial problem. The murderer does not consider a life worth living when “…it is difficult for the person to carry out household and social activities”.
What if a person can’t keep up a hobby or social relations? Is this life meaningless? Or isn’t every life meaningful simply because we all can feel pain and joy, comfort and discomfort? Is the individual person not the only to answer for themselves if their own life is meaningful? Where does this arrogance, to judge another life as meaningful or not, come from?
The Nazis eliminated more than 70 000 disabled people during world war 2 with help of a programme called “Aktion T4”. They distributed posters which depicted disabled people as cost factors and damage for the welfare of the country. They took disabled children away from their families, put them in institutions, which later were “cleared”: Disabled people were murdered by injections or gassed. The first victim of involuntary euthanasia was a person diagnosed with “idiocy” (that fact is a pretty good reason to let go of “idiot” and related ableist slurs btw). “Those who do not work, shall not eat.” Everyone considered a burden by the Nazis” had to go”.
What do these gloomy times have to do with the presence, here and now, one might ask? And one might add that Sagamihara was a singular incident with only one perpetrator.
I think what worries me and other disabled people is that eugenicists narratives are still alive and powerful, eugenicists beliefs are shared even if most individuals might not be capable of performing such an act of hate as in Sagamihara. Eugenics are not gone from the presence. They show in socalled social politics, where people die, when they don’t get needed medical help and assistance funded, when benefits are cut and individuals are declared fit for work while they aren’t fit and deemed to die in neglect, by starvation, not surviving homelessness, by suiciding themselves.
Eugenics still exist, disabled people can be sterilized if their legal guardian decides that it seems to be necessary.
Eugenicists beliefs are traced in media narratives of alleged “mercy killings” that reinforce the idea that one “is better off dead than disabled”.
Somethings that helps to uphold eugenicists beliefs is the myth of independence. Only those who are fully independent are considered to lead a meaningful life. Those who depend on others are perceived as a burden. Actually no one is fully independent, but we all are existing within interdependent relations. Not only the unemployed individuals depend. The one who has got a job is dependent on the employer, the employer on their workers, a family member on the other family members, we are not free of needing acknowledgement and we all need the supplies for daily living. It is a big problem when you are expected and forced to give up autonomous decisions because you depend in some areas of life.
The process to be declared unfit for work lasted more than ten years in my case. It was always obvious that I can’t work fulltime with the condition of my spine and chronic pain, but after a violent experience and being diagnosed with PTSD I got the full contempt for being considered “useless+superfluous”.
A doctor who worked for the welfare department asked me: “When do you actually want to give society something back?”
Society is only meaningful when it is a solidary society. And it is the right for autonomous decisions of disabled people I strife and work for.
And for the freedom to define myself what is meaningful to me.
So please, nondisabled people out there: Don’t let us disabled people wake up to our own death.
the aging crip in the mirror is me
The aging crip in the mirror is me
Mangelnde Perspektiven auch was gute Nähe betrifft.
Was soll’s I am late to the party. Habe ich credibility at all???
I am not your mirror. The aging crip in the mirror is me.
Regeln klingen erstmal krass festgelegt.

Just some non-binary dance moves (Part one)
PART ONE
(this is an attempt to queer a known fairy tale narrative, this time told from the perspective of an ex-member of the deep-sea-folk-community)
First Letter
Dear Lou,
it’s been a while…it’s been a while since I last saw you. It’s been a while since one of the watchers of our community said that you did not return, and we all knew what that meant even if noone ever explained why it was impossible to return.
It’s been a while since I arrived on land. I don’t remember getting on land for good, that must have been somewhere else; the first city had no ocean, just a big river, and when I arrived there, I was on board of a ship, don’t ask me how that happened, my memory is totally blank when it is about the journey.
When I got off, my feet moved all by themselves as if they would know where I am supposed to be headed. I knew which subway line to take and on my way to it I looked into shopping windows and didn’t recognize myself, I mean, I didn’t ressemble a being from the deep-sea-folk-community any longer. It dawned on me that I might not recognize you either, your ’new appearance‘.
To my astonishment I could understand all the words, knew what they meant immediately, people did not pay much attention to me, I looked ’normal‘ to them. I found keys in one of my bags, and when I arrived at a certain station I got off and just went straight to a house, put the keys into a door, climbed the stairs to the fourth floor, entered a flat and at the same time my new life as a human being.
I went out everyday, just drifting around, wondering why it was so difficult to walk, as if my feet would weigh tons, and still it was a pleasure. I looked into my mailbox often, although I did not know what I was waiting for. Finally one day, there was a letter, and soon two other letters, and they said I did apply for university studies. I could choose between 3 cities and different universities. I took the train to the closest of those cities nearby, a small town rather, it looked like a picture book come alive, the whole scenery. I walked a path up the hill in the middle of the town and stopped at a rock on which butterflies were opening and closing their wings, opening and closing. I read that as a ‚yes‘.
Now I am living here since September and the semester will start soon. I don’t know if I really can talk, haven’t talked much yet, and I wonder if it will work, if I will know something to say, if it will sound ’natural‘. I am so accustomed to silence.
I miss the glances you and I exchanged. That was my favourite communication.

Second letter
Lou,
I had a nightmare: I was back into the water again when I saw something floating by, then I realized it is you, but you were dying…
A drowning ‚mermaid‘, you wouldn’t believe it!
They picture us as ‚mermaids‘, did you know that? I am sitting in the library now, mostly preparing for my studies, but I also took some collections of fairy tales from the shelves.
They picture us as girls or women and I giggled a little, because it seemed so absurd. Because noone of the deep-sea-folk ever thinks in these categories. We are hybrid beings. That is all there is to know. You would never count all the single parts that add up to one being and say: This sums up as that and that gender. I guess they will read me as whatever they want to. Also, the fairy tales claim that the mermaid protagonist wanted to be human because she* was searching for romantic love. And when I read this I want to rewrite the whole tale. Although I have to admit, it is quite beautiful and sad what the guy named Hans Christian Andersen put down on paper.
‚I’ve come a long way…‘ we both know I did not leave the folks and become human for any romantic lovestory. I missed you. And I wanted to find out if this life that books described existed, I was curious.
Remember, when we took our excursions to the deserted islands? The watchers always told us which islands we were allowed to visit and for how long. We swam together to the surface of the water, broke through, that is how it felt, like a break through. Getting on land we soon found out why we were allowed to visit this or that certain island. It was a very didactic choice.
Sometimes we stumbled over dead corpses, they were supposed to remind us how cruel human beings could be, we shouldn’t feel attracted to the idea of becoming human. At one of this places, there was an abandoned house. I went in, looked into every room, while you stood at the beach as if waiting for a sign of the watchers wanting us to come back. Meanwhile I had taken a seat in some chair, there were a lot of books, and I started one, found out that I was able read it. I decided I have to return to that room. So we happened to be there more often, you at your guard, walking up and down the beach, me sinking into other worlds while reading. You had to knock at the door or at a window after some time.
I retold every story I had read to you, I changed a little when I thought the plot needed it. You listened when we were back at the depth. Folks wondered where the new narratives came from, but they did not intervene. Soon you enrichened the traditional tunes with some adapted lyrics of those stories I told.
I never would have thought you’d be the first one to leave.
I never imagine you with a ‚prince‘ by the way. I like to imagine you sitting on a wall of bricks with a woman. She ist taking your hand. And you answer her grip but you still look in front of you. A long time. Then you turn to her and you kiss the palm of her hand.
Sorry, but you don’t know how happy this makes me, to imagine it this way. You, not alone, and not this typical man-woman stuff.
(That man-woman stuff in the books was the disappointing part, I was more fascinated by beings having to create meaning all the time, unable to avoid creating it out of all that happens)

Third letter
Dear Lou,
I had to think about the bargain with the wizard. I had an appointment at the doctor’s today that reminded me of some things the wizard said:
The wizard said I had to give up my grace, I did not know what s_he was aiming at. Now I get some idea. It has something to do with my body and the perception of it. The wizard claimed that noone would find me an extraordinary being, at the same time they would perceive me as different and this ‚different‘ wouldn’t have any positive connotation. Now I wonder after reading all those narratives, why s_he did not ask me for trading my voice. Did s_he ask you for trading your voice? Yours had always been the most beautiful. Also s_he did not say what would happen if a certain goal won’t be achieved, like reciprocal love or whatever, in the mermaid narrative the protagonist becomes foam on the sea, because she spares the loved prince and his bride. Did wizards become less traditional? S_he warned me, I would feel everything ten times more intense after becoming human. How could that have been scary? All emotions we knew in our deep-sea life were basically contentement, a vague longing for less repetition maybe, sometimes melancholy. That was it. To have a wide spectrum of feelings seemed more an incentive than a threat to me
Before I left the wizard recited: Things themselves wouldn’t be that bad, just the perception of human beings of those things as ‚bad‘ would be disadvantageous.
The doctor was not very satisfied with my health condition today
And tomorrow semester starts…
Does anyone call you by your name, Lou?
Mika
Fourth letter
Dear Lou,
It is midnight, I am feeling so anxious, in a few hours, you know…will they accept me as a human being…or will it be like that paradoxically prophecy by the wizard?
I wish you’d swim next to me, and the moment we ‚break through‘ the surface and meet the beams I just would want to think;
L(O)UMINE
That is your name.
Mika
What I should have researched+mentioned: The origin of the term caring communities
I was acting ignorant when I wrote my last blogpost about ‚caring communities‘ without enough research. I wanted to hear my own thoughts and feelings towards that term that someone used in a conversation with me and that was completely new to me.
I have this ‚take a personal experience as a starting-point‘-approach, but it was definitely not O.K. and ignorant, that I didn’t invest more effort into more research after I put my own thoughts down. Before I clicked publish, I should have done that.
I found a few German blogposts, if you just google caring communities, there will be a lot of stuff concerning elderly people, and I found few posts in German (my last blogpost exists only in a German version) that were about queer and disabled people in caring communities. I posted links to them on twitter.
I realized only today, after I have been critized, and the critic is justified, that all the authors of the German texts I posted afterwards might be white. And it matters who created that term that gave me a space to think and feel around.
I was told today, that Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, a queer, disabled femme of color, a writer, performer and teacher coined that term, and on her blog brownstargirl.org you’ll find a lot important work about intersections and about caring communities. She is also a great thinker regarding class. ( Class as intersection in this article about disability justice http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/for-badass-disability-justice-working-class-and-poor-lead-models-of-sustainable-hustling-for-liberation )
Intersectional women are often the ones who develope new terms as tools for liberation.
And I apologize that I did not research until finding the origin of the term.
I should have mentioned that I write from the perspective of a person that experiences ableism, classism, limited health and limited economical power, living a precary life, but possessing white privilege. And taking an inspiring term, forgetting, neglecting to search for the source, is very common for people with white privilege. I wouldn’t have thought I’d do that myself, so it’s good someone pointed at it. And I think this is endlessly frustrating for intersectional women when this happens. And I am sorry that I added something to that frustration, I have to do better.
Who cares?
Einige Gedanken dazu, was caring commmunities sein könnten
2. Teil Caring communities? In need of a vision
